What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

I had always left financial decisions to other people that 'knew better' but came to a point in my life where I needed to establish myself as an independent thinker, and independent provider for myself, now and into the future. I didn't want someone else to tell me what I should do, I wanted to work with someone that would help me learn to think for myself what was best for me

Absolutely!

Helen has worked with me to help me consider what's really at risk; to balance different needs and for different timeframes. I now have both security financially but also for myself psychologically

What could they have done better?

There isn't anything that Helena could have done better. She understands what is helpful, and she develops a trusting relationship which has enabled me to explore where I would have previously avoided. And the contract we have means that I know any discussion we have is not driven by 'more' financial gain. The fees are already discussed, so now we can get on with what we are here to do - create & develop financial security and independence.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

I was looking for advice on early retirement, to see if I could afford to do this. I had received some inheritance money but didn't know if my plan was realistic.

How has Helena Wardle helped you?

Helena helped me understand my pension AVCs and how to save tax, showed how I could afford to retire early- but not in quite the same way as I had planned without her advice.

Yes, I now have a clear plan. Helena was great, really friendly. Was very quick to assess my situation. I was vary about dealing with a financial adviser but realised after my first meeting there wasn't going to be a problem.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

In 2010, when I retired from 30 years service with the police, I did what most officer's do and commuted the maximum allowable part of my pension. The year before my wife had inherited an considerable amount of shares and money from her uncle and we had been pleased with the advice that Helena had given her so it seemed natural for me to seek her advice as to how best to invest the money to provide an income to supplement my pension.

Helena helped me understand my attitude to risk, suggesting investment companies, moving our assets from an underperforming company, maximising our ISA's and CGT allowances and, more latterly, minimising our administration costs and explaining the IHT consequences of not planning sufficiently well in advance (including the need to spend more!)

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Very much so. Setting aside the obvious impact of the current pandemic, we have seen good levels of growth (we are now back above the pre-pandemic level), we have started distributing wealth to our children and grandchildren and have been less concerned with saving.

What could they have done better?

While I understand the importance of constructive feedback for improving performance, I can honestly say that there is nothing to improve upon as far as I am concerned. It is rare to find advisors with such obvious professional abilities and personable qualities so when you do you stick with them; which is why I have been with Helena for a decade and I have no intentions of moving elsewhere.

Needed to amalgamate a few pensions & considering retirement so wanted advice.

How has Helena Wardle helped you?

Prior to covid Helena visited us at home (myself & partner) on a number of occasions. She went through all our finances, savings, expenditure etc. She contacted all of our pension companies to collect details. She gave us all details and we had in depth discussions over what we actually wanted & what we could actually afford. She is an excellent listener and talked to us in a way we could easily understand. She was extremely thorough & double checked consistently that we understand everything she was telling us. She was then available for zoom meetings during covid to help whenever needed. Always very quick to respond to texts and emails.

Definitely! Excellent pension investment advice.

What could they have done better?

In my dealings so far with Helena it’s very hard to find any criticism. If we have ever had any issues, she has been swift to resolve them. I wouldn’t use anyone else for financial advice now we have found her.

I needed to seek advice on that transfer. My wife and I also needed advice on planning our retirement income and pension provision something we had been meaning to do for many years.

She worked with us to put together a financial plan for our current needs and our needs in retirement. Subsequent meetings confirmed this to be the case.

Yes we have been presented with a comprehensive financial report that Helena talked through. At all times she was constantly checking to see that we understood what she was presenting to us. She clearly laid out the options we had, these were presented at 3 different levels, giving us different options to achieve what we wanted. There were graphs and illustrations used to set out each of these options. We were impressed by the fact that she called out actions we could take or could choose to use their services. At no time did we feel pressured into anything.

Pension advice - I looked in my local areas and and found Helena

How has Helena Wardle helped you?

Helena looked at my 3 of my 4 pension pots as I wanted to expidite my retirement by transfering a forgotten pension over to another one of my pensions that I could access before my stated retirement date - Helena also looked at my wifes pension and made sure we made the right longterm decison for us both.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

To be honest, no I didnt see the outcome I wanted because I wanted to drawdown on a large protected pension by transferring it, Helena did the maths and said, it isnt worth moving the pension as this is a guaranteed life pension - it does not have a bottom to the ot, as long as I live it pays out. Helena listened and worked out another way that we could move forward by drawing down on the 25% tax free amount on my other pensions to enable us to do some of the things we wanted to achieve by being honest and whether I liked it or not Helena's decison making was right and Helena explained why she would not advise me to move the pot to enable me to retire early. Helena is honest, ethical and to the point, this is refreshing fro me as money is money, Helena could have signed my paperwork, made a few thousand pounds and moved on but she didn't. If you want someone to look at your interests and give you an honest opinion then look no further Helena is your advisor.

I could have asked for a better advisor and given all the advce Helena gave what could she have done better - nothing!

I missed a call from Helena and when I got a call back it was from someone else in the company, when I had requested Helena's expertise through VouchedFor. The person I spoke to was much less experienced than Helena and I didn't get the level of confidence I was looking for. I have now gone with a different financial advisor.

My old financial advisor was leaving the profession once he had to charge. He did not agree with that. He handed me over to another firm, and after some bad advice from them, I switched to Helena. Helena was already advising my partner, and I was so impressed with her care and attention to detail (although she was advising my partner, she wanted to meet me to get the full picture and get her advice right for us). This really impressed me so I switch to Helena.

Our original contact with Helena was in 2013 through Nationwide. In 2014 I was made redundant. and we were looking for help to make the best use of lump sum etc. that was to be paid. In mid 2015 we found we needed further advice when my wife was made redundant. Nationwide did not seem able to help as before so following an internet search we contacted Helena at Sterling & law.

At Nationwide Helena carried out a full financial review and recommended a package of investments that ensured we were able to both protect funds in the medium term by investing and having 'cash' funds in the best possible place. At Sterling & Law she did the same but had an much more extensive options to draw on. We now have a wider mix of investment that cover our long, medium and short term needs. Helena took the time to get to know us as a couple, understand our plans for the future and she ensured that we both understood the outcome of our actions and is always there if we need her.

Responds well to questions and concerns. Never fails to return calls. Patient and easy to talk to. Frank and honest. Gives good advice and listens to client preferences and discusses options and points out possible pitfalls and advantages relative to the clients needs.

Difficult to say. Not come across a situation where we have been concerned. The only problem experienced is with the transfer of investments from our original provider. However, this appears to be an Industry problem. It seems Financial Institutions in general do not grasp the fact that money invested does not actually belong to them. Making such changes become long, drawn out, complex affairs designed to penalise the client for acting in their own interest rather than that of the provider.
