Having previously been burnt by an unscrupulous IFA, we've managed our finances ourselves for many years. With retirement approaching it's become clear that we need help with the transition from earning salaries to living off our savings and investments. After spending a lot of time researching the options on VouchedFor and other websites, we decided to approach Alex at TPO. The reasons for choosing Alex were: - Independent, with a long list of qualifications and certifications. - Both Alex and TPO look like they have a good long-term approach to helping their clients. The fact that they have specialists in an area like long-term care planning is definitely a bonus for us. - A transparent fee structure, with published prices for specific services and a fixed percentage for ongoing management services. - The initial documentation we've received provides very detailed information about their policies, regulatory compliance, ownership structure, client obligations, etc., all of which helps build confidence that TPO is a company committed to doing the right things. - The majority of Alex's VouchedFor reviewers are in the £500k+ category, and although some of them have marked Alex down slightly for "Value", it seems to us that if you want the best possible service you're not going to get the lowest possible price. - The fact that the TPO head office is in Leeds and their City of London office isn't in one of the most prestigious locations suggests that they're careful with how they're spending their money, which is also a good sign. In summary, our initial impressions have been wholly positive. If we go ahead with Alex and TPO, we'll have to come back an give an update based on our experiences.

Alex and his team have been assiduous at all stages in establishing my objectives and risk profile (which weren't fully formed, but Alex carefully and sensitively helped to crystallise those), analysing actual and scenario cashflows, reviewing my existing pension arrangements, discussing investment options and creating a proposal.

Started working with TPO/Alex in early 2023, adjusted the conversation as circumstances changed and agreed Alex's proposal in late 2023. So, it's early days, but the overall outcome ( versus my target of having an agreed approach by the end of 2023) has been achieved

What could they have done better?

I don't have anything specific to highlight. Alex has adapted quickly and effectively to changes in my circumstances, ensured that my questions were quickly and comprehensively answered and made himself available whenever I wished to meet in person.

Yes, Alex is clearly very experienced and confident in his advice. We came away confident that we could meet our retirement needs. We wanted to know more about the potential for an ongoing service but have not received follow up.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

In general terms yes. I was hoping for more more specific advice from the exercise including excel output of the modelling since the advice will need to be used for budgeting. Perhaps I am different from other clients?

What could they have done better?

Alex produced a good report and spent the promised 90 minutes of quality time with us. His back up in preparing the report changed hand and was quite slow in the preparation for the meeting. A few points were raised the meeting, but as yet they have not been followed up. Is resourcing an issue within the TPO business?

Yes. Decided to monetise pension and have professionally invested. Makes you nervous as it is your retirement income. Performance has been ok and we haven’t been worried despite financial turbulence.

What could they have done better?

We are all set up so it’s pretty steady state so the whole thing can feel a bit tick box. Performance of investments isn’t strong enough that all the fees become immaterial I guess the above distils to is there a model which delivers the same assurance and investment performance at a lower cost. Don’t want Ryanair but don’t need a Xmas hamper either

Alex took the time to visit us in person, with a colleague and, in a detailed conversation understood our: financial situation, investment aims and risk appetite. He proposed an investment strategy we were happy with and made the process of investing as smooth and easy as possible. Despite market volatility over the subsequent years, the investments have more than satisfied our expectations, even when fees are taken into account.

We had already monetized defined benefit scheme and TPO took over the company advising us. Our advisor left and we inherited Alex

Trust, chemistry, relationship. The advice is sound but the financial advisor is front of house for the process which selects the fund managers and ultimately that drives the investment performance

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

The key is trust if you are not expert and the chemistry with Alex is very good. In that sense, yes. The reason my reviews are not stronger is that my sense is that Alex is overloaded and TPO aren’t always responsive.

What could they have done better?

At times the TPO processes feel cumbersome and stuff takes a long time. Objectively I understand that regulated advice has to go through compliance hoops but it’s not Amazon. I don’t think this is Alex so some of my reflections are TPO and not Alex

I've been in a quandary for some time about finding a wealth advisor I was comfortable with. Having researched TPO's structure and style, I opted to speak with Alex based on his proximity to my home and his brief profile on the web. At our first conversation I was immediately reassured with his transparency and integrity, the clarity of charging arrangements, the absence of lock-ins to financial products, the ownership structure of TPO and the environmental values espoused. We had a very useful telephone discussion about our situation and Alex explained in very simple but explicit ways how he personally and his company would approach any future working together. What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

My company defined benefit pension scheme was closing to further contributions, and I was offered an enhanced transfer value. I was looking for professional guidance on the benefits, risks and other implications of transferring out of the scheme.

How has Alex Hatfield helped you?

Alex completed a detail financial analysis and long term forecast of several possible options, explored my attitude to risk, retirement expectations and time frame. He also gave very good answers and explanations to the many questions that I raised. At the conclusion, I felt that I was able to make a very well informed decision on transferring into a SIPP, which was set up by Alex and The Private Office.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Yes - Alex managed the transfer very smoothly, my SIPP was set up as planned, and has been operating without hitch for nearly a year now. I feel that I had good advice, and have no doubt that Alex helped me reach the right decision. We have had two reviews with Alex in this period, and the ongoing support and responses to follow-up questions has been excellent.

What could they have done better?

Nothing comes to mind. Alex and TPO continue to provide excellent advice and service on our financial affairs.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

This was my second attempt at finding a reliable, capable financial adviser, since we needed to consolidate and know our position - second marriage in our 50's and needing to understand our position. We wanted to know when we could retire, what we would need to do to get there as soon as we wanted to, and what adjustments we would need to make to achieve our retirement goals.

How has Alex Hatfield helped you?

Alex and his team explained what they could offer, walked us through how they could apply their services to our circumstances, through virtual meeting and questionnaires found out all about us, our needs, our wants, what we knew about ourselves, and our feelings around risk. They then reviewed our then current position and demonstrated thoroughly how we could be managing our pensions to best reach the position we'd like to be in. It was a totally eye opening and liberating experience. I am, for the first time in my life, excited about pensions, finances, and I feel I understand this 'mystery' that is pensions. I wish I'd met them years ago!

So far yes, we have clarity, they are proactive, responsive, knowledgable and I feel safe. I didn't realise how satisfying and comforting having confidence in a financial adviser could be. They are so approachable that I also feel I could ask anything.

I cannot think of a single thing. Perhaps found us earlier?!? No, nothing springs to mind.

It was interesting to hear how Alex with others have developed the company to be a large independent financial advisory company covering all aspect wealth management. For the advice I am after I am pleased that Alex has chartered status and together with how the fees are clearly given and they and they are not paid on commission for going to certain products I feel that I will get honest independent advice at a reasonable price.

We lost confidence in our previous financial adviser. We felt we were misguided with regard to inheritance planning and long term care. Also we found that the investment benefits were outweighed by the charges In addition we never received written reports on our meetings.

How has Alex Hatfield helped you?

Following our first meeting, he prepared a very detailed recommendations report showing a good understanding of our financial position and our investment objectives. The report compared the costs of our previous investment portfolio with his recommendations and showed a significant saving. Ongoing when he makes recommendations he also details the reasons for making changes. Overall adviser fees and investment charges are fully transparent.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Yes we have received good advice on inheritance tax planning and capital gains tax on property. Our investment portfolio with the Private Office is reviewed and re-balanced regularly and we have online visibility of its current value. We have seen satisfactory growth in relation to market conditions.
