James has continually kept on top of all of our financial situation. He has reassured us when markets have been tough over the last few years and has been there for any questions that we have no matter how trivial. He provides with regular updates as to how we are progressing against our pension planning which is key for us in the run-up to retirement. I cannot recommend James enough and have actually recommended him to a number of my friends. He is a valued advisor to myself and my husband, he’s a really lovely person who I trust with my financial position and always turns up with the smile on his face. Discussing your financial position is really personal but James always makes it an enjoyable experience. I would highly recommend James if you were looking for that trusted advisor.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

We have three pensions schemes in place and was looking for advice on the best option for us. Each scheme was slightly different and the jargon and figures were all a little confusing. We looked on line for a local advisor and James reviews on here sealed the deal for us. James got back to us the same day by phone and spoke to us, then arranged a date and time to pop into the office and show him all the paperwork.

James was absolutely superb in helping us plan our retirement. We have three pensions and were totally bemused by all the jargon , figures and potential choices. James explained everything in clear layman's terms busting all the jargon into simple to understand facts and figures. He has a calm disposition and a very friendly way which really puts you at ease. What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

We saw another Financial adviser who advised we should pool my 2 DC pensions and 1DB pension into a drawdown. This advice persuaded me to give my company 6 months notice of retirement, however on a second meeting 3 months later the same adviser denied he had so advised us. We sought further advice from the Moneyhelper team and from that meeting we found James

James listened to our story, wasn’t panicked by our retirement deadline and was able to reassure us that our 2DC pensions would allow us to cope even if we had to accept the guaranteed benefit annual amount from the DB pension. He said that he would have to be confident that the DB transfer was best for us and cautioned that he refused 4 out of 5 that he considered

Absolutely, because of our strong DC pension pots, James was able to advise that we could transfer the DB pension and DC pensions into a drawdown pension as we had wished. His compliance team and insurers were also in agreement.

We were advised by another pension adviser that it would be impossible to transfer a DB pension, something that we were keen to do. Having spoken to the Government pension advice service, we were given a link to follow on companies that might be able to help and James was top of the list!

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

On a fixed fee basis, I asked James to produce a report on options for amalgamating various personal pensions and how to derive an income in retirement.

How has James Hodges helped you?

The report fully met the brief and was produced in a timely manner. Throughout, James willingly held a number of lengthy online meetings to ensure I fully understood the options and conclusions; he dealt with a large number of questions quickly in a direct and honest manner. Although not included and without asking for further fees, he went on to implement my favoured option.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

James went above and beyond the fixed fee. He has throughout demonstrated a highly professional approach, is very amicable with a genuine desire to help at what is a “life event”. I have been incredibly impressed by his attitude and James simply stands heads above other IFAs I have used in recent years.

What could they have done better?

I don't believe that James could have done anything better. He implemented and oversaw the new arrangement which due to the nature of the existing pensions wasn't always straightforward and kept me advised of progress. I would be happy to go back to James for future IFA advice.

Retirement is a scary enough project on its own, I guess I must have been like many others who simply saved into pension pots over the years thinking it might happen one day. Covid and Brexit combined in my case to make this happen earlier than expected. James assessed our situation, explaining everything clearly and concisely. He helped us devise a retirement plan which would provide an adequate living standard for my wife and myself without draining our capital.

Yes, very satisfactorily.

What could they have done better?

Nothing at all, it was an excellent experience. Perhaps donating a million pounds to my pension fund, but I guess that might be asking too much, !!!

I was in a good position financially and needed to look ahead to early retirement, 6 years ahead of official dates and needed sage advise on how to manage everything going forward.

How has James Hodges helped you?

After an initial consultation and looking at all options James came up with what looked like a very feasible plan for both myself and my wife. He arranged all previous pensions funds to be transferred into just my current fund. Then when closer to the day we have now changed the funds into a more manageable and less risk system where I have a "larder" of products that continues to grow and that I have flexible access to as and when required

The outcome and projected amounts are above what I thought I would be able to manage so I am very happy.

The only thing that James could have done better but due to Covid was unable to do and that was a couple of additional face to face meetings during the final transitions etc.

I was moving home & looking to take early retirement. As this would all be new to me I was wondering how I would manage financial with not working anymore & not being of retirement age so couldn't draw state pension.

James was very re-assuring & he said that a lot of people ask the question of how will they manage. We got together & had a meeting to discuss what my options would be, I found James advice to be most helpful. Initially started as life insurance and income protection which I had been considering for a while, but then moved onto Pension transfers and consolidation.

How has James Hodges helped you?

James assisted in finding products that were suitable to meet our circumstance and budget. One of the crucial things that James helped with was explaining the different levels of cover available in a way that was simple to digest. It was also not a 'hard sell' but a very much on advice level. After this moved onto pension transfers which is often a complex arena. What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

A year ago I had the option to transfer out a pension with a previous employer or to leave it in. It was a significant amount of money and my main pension source and I was unsure of the best approach.

How has James Hodges helped you?

I had to make a decision very quickly, and James was very quick to supply advice. I met him and he went through my financial position and that of my husband's - savings, ISAs, mortgage etc. He then ran a profile for me, and was able to advise me on the best course of action, based on my financial position and my risk appetite. I decided to withdraw my pension and invest it, and through James's help, met with a number of Fund Managers, and appointed one to manage my fund.

The first session is always very technical with flowcharts and graphs etc. It could perhaps be a little simpler and so saved a few headaches getting to grips with them. I understand that the information is essential but very much appreciated the conversation afterwards on what it meant to my lifestyle and best practice for future spending a lot more. The flowcharts and graphs mean a lot more now with a couple of years comparison to play with.

I had reached 55 and had several pensions dotted all over the place. I wanted some help planning when I could realistically retire and what I could expect. I wanted some advice on taking some money out to clear a small mortgage.

How has James Hodges helped you?

He helped me get a value for all the pensions. Took time to establish what I needed and what my aims were. He showed me all the all the different options and clearly explained the advantages and pitfalls of the various options I had.
