What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

I needed expert advice on the provision of retirement income in view of the fact that I am planning to fully retire in the near future. I decided to go to Mark as I had previously dealt with him some 15 years ago.

As my wife and I were planning ahead to our retirement we required the help of a Financial Adviser, we were introduced to Mark and he has advised us since 2016

We have always found that Mark has been available to discuss any financial issues or concerns we may have had and has promptly responded with his advice and suggestions to resolve these issues. We have had regular six monthly meetings, where we have had the opportunity to discuss our investments and their performance in detail.

Since using Mark as our adviser, we have seen a number of crises that have affected the world economy (Brexit, Covid, Russia/Ukraine war) and through all these Mark has always discussed with us his recommendations for any changes to our investments, which would ultimately benefit our overall Portfolio.

Despite the Economic difficulties we have all faced in the past few years I think Mark has done very well in managing our investments through these difficult times. We feel confident that Mark will keep a close eye on our Portfolio and would always make suggestions to make changes should they be necessary.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

Following displacement from my job role, my leaving company recommended consulting a financial adviser to discuss my company pension. My father recommended his financial adviser to assist in this advice.

How has Mark MacLean helped you?

Mark has assisted me with deciding on whether to leave my pension pots with their original providers or move individual pension pots to a better serving provider, recommended a solicitor for a will and given advice on investing a gift from a relative.

It has not been a full year since decisions have been actioned but under difficult economic conditions am confident in the decision making.

The only irritation was the length of time to transfer certain pensions but this was more to do with pension providers and regulations.

We had a number of meetings all bar one were in person. Face to face meeting are my preferred way of meeting but difficult to schedule as I work full time so a higher proportion of remote meetings would have been helpful.

As I approached retirement age I started to think more about sorting out our finances for the future. Mark had helped me with my company pension so I made an appointment for my wife and I to meet with Mark to discuss all of our finances for the future.

Mark spent some time with us to find out more about our needs and requirements before putting together some proposals. These were presented to us at a further meeting and we were very impressed with them and we decided to work with Mark as our Financial Advisor and Planner.

Mark has always provided us with regular updates on our Portfolio and has always given us sound advice and recommendations on any changes he has suggested to our Portfolio. I retired at the start of the pandemic and wanted to be sure my various pension pots were providing me with the best returns, taking into account my desire to invest in ethical and sustainable funds.

How has Mark MacLean helped you?

Mark has advised on: consolidation of some of the funds and leaving others with existing providers; the provider best able to meet my investment requirements; how to go about ensuring the pensions can be inherited outside my estate He also looked after the initial transfer of funds and has since helped with subsequent drawdowns and other paperwork required as necessary. He keeps me up to date with status, having both Zoom meetings during the pandemic, and face to face more recently.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Given the detrimental impact on savings and investments arising from: the pandemic, Brexit knock-on effects, the war in Ukraine, the Truss budget debacle, it is hard to say that my pensions are in the state I was hoping for! However, this is not something Mark could have changed, and I think the pension state is as good as could have been expected without sacrificing my principles. I have been very pleased to see the measured positive outcomes from my pension investment, which makes me realise that despite everything, based on Mark’s advice, I have been able to contribute to helping the planet.

I was considering retirement and as I had run my own business for more than 30 years needed specialist advice on the pension I had acquired.

As I am a very cautious investor Mark advised us to split our investments into 50% cast iron investments and 50% speculative investments to give us a better income.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

The reasoning for the requirement of a financial advisor was that i do not have the skill set to be able to manage my assets efficiently. That said, when i was still working, my company had offered to all employees a financial advisor from our pension provider if we wished to take them on . Having known some of my colleagues that had chosen to go with them and the reviews that came back on the advise given led me to believe that their was no personnel touch and some doubt on if they really had your full interests on board.

Mark was able to explain in full depth the pro”s and con”s on directions of choice in simple “Layman’s terms for the best investments to suit my situation. This allowed me to understand my best options and gave me confidence in my overall decisions.

A need c25 years ago to transfer out of a final salary scheme and Mark assisted me when I was referred to him. I wanted someone who was independent, took the trouble to understand me and my situation etc.
